Summertime haboobs are more than just social-media photo ops; the massive dust storms represent health risks because of the pollutants they carry. Though Maricopa County has more air-pollutant monitors than are required federally, there are still vast areas where they are lacking. To get a more comprehensive view, a team of ASU students worked with NASA and the county to design a model that can predict air quality in places where there are fewer monitors — and the project proved so successful it has been extended for a second round.
